Do I need to fast before testing?
Fasting before a blood test is often necessary to receive an accurate measurement. Eating and drinking can temporarily decrease or elevate certain factors in the blood, which can lead to inaccurate results.
Blood tests that commonly require fasting include (but are not limited to):
- Hormone tests and panels
- Cholesterol, glucose, and metabolic tests
- Deficiency tests like Iron and Vitamin B12
- Thyroid tests
Your lab order will provide specific instructions about fasting. Follow these instructions to ensure that your results are accurate.
How long do I fast before a blood test?
Fasting typically means avoiding food or drink (besides water) for eight to twelve hours prior to your test. This includes coffee and alcoholic beverages.
Do I need to take my test at a certain time of day?
Depending on the test, you may need to take it at a specific time of day. You may also want to take a test early in the morning if it requires fasting, so that you do not have to avoid eating or drinking all day.
Your lab order will include instructions on how and when to take your test (if necessary), along with other directions like fasting. Be sure to read and follow these instructions.
What do I need to bring with me when I go for my test?
You should bring:
- Your printed Lab Requisition Form (available in the My Labs section of your account)
- Your photo ID
You must have your Lab Requisition Form at your appointment – otherwise you may be billed again before you can take your test.
Do not present your insurance card to the lab testing site, because you already paid for your testing through Defy Medical. If you show your insurance card, you may be charged twice for testing.
Do I need an appointment for my test?
Appointments requirements vary by location. Most testing sites allow walk-ins; however, we recommend checking with your location prior to arriving.
You can find your nearest LabCorp location here.
I’m on Hormone Replacement Therapy – should I take my medication before the test?
If you are on HRT, you should have your lab test done before your next Testosterone injection or after your hormone cream application that day (unless otherwise instructed by your doctor).
If you are on thyroid treatment, you should take your dose as scheduled the morning of the lab test prior to having your lab done.
Should I take my regular medications before my test?
Continue taking your regular medications unless otherwise instructed by a licensed medical provider.
If you’re taking nonessential nutritional supplements, you may consider pausing your regimen so that you receive accurate test results, especially if you’re testing nutrition levels.
